What does DKP mean and what role does the system play in MMORPGS?
Every MMORPG veteran is likely to have heard of DKP — at least when he has seen a raid from the inside. Although the ancient system has largely exhibited, but will still be used in games like Classic. Only what are DKP actually? Mango explains.
What is DKP? The abbreviation stands for Dragon Kill Points and you show a numeric value that gives players in a RAID group. DKP was first incurred in the MMORPG Everest in 1999.
The then only RAID bosses were the two dragons Lady Vox and Lord Age. Player Tharp has invented the Dragon Kill Points for his guild afterlife to make the Loot distribution reasonably fairly.
Trivia: Bill Aftathott Dress founded the famous website Hottest, which news should collect for MMORPGs. The more or less official successor to the site is the famous WoW fan site Warhead, which was bought in 2007 by the Hottest owner ZAM Network. The Classic version of the site has even since 2019 a Hottest theme.
Where are they used? DKP are one of many Loot systems, and they are used in their actual form, especially of solid guilds in Raids. Since the system is quite expensive, Random groups usually resort to lighter methods.
Accordingly, DKP comes mainly from the core area of MMORPG gamers who deal with the toughest challenges. Today, some guilds use the system, especially in Old-School Games or Remakes like WOW CLASSIC.
DKP as a Loot system for guilds
How to work DKP? DKP are used to bid upbeats. For participation in a RAID or a boss-kill player DKP, with which you can then offer on items.
There are no fixed rules. The guild or guild conductor determines how many points you get per participation and how many points an item costs. Depending on the procedure, there are two common methods here:
Fixed price: The item costs a certain amount of DKP and interested parties can pay these. For several interested parties is diced or offered. Bid: An item starts with a basic value and the players offer them in the chat or a quiet bid on it. The maximum price wins.
Incidentally, DKP can also be deducted from the RAID conductor, for example with excessive errors or bad behavior. Such a certain discipline should be guaranteed.
What types of DKP exist? The standard system is often referred to as EQUIP. Over the years, the DKP system has always evolved. Meanwhile, there are add-ons and websites for many MMORPGs dealing with exactly such Loot systems — such as Warcraft DKP.
In the core, these methods always remain the same, but allow adjustments such as separate points for presence, kills or participation or the course of purchases and the current equipment status of the Raiders.
A relatively new variant are the Perfect DKP or Gold-DKP (or GDP). In this system, quasi is offered directly with gold or the corresponding games' currency. Who offers the most gold, gets the item.
The amount offered is then equally divided on all participants, partly with a small tax for the guild. Thus, however, the system bypasses the excessive hoard of points and ensures that everyone has something of a kill — even without a lot. It can come to extremely absurd sums:
An unsealed system with many alternatives
What is the disadvantage of DKP? Without a tool, DKP should be complicated. The officers of the guild must guide lists and update them manually. The look-up who has received which item or the look of the own DKP is so much awkward.
As DKP is usually awarded for participation and kills, new entrants have always been a disadvantage in guilds. Although there are something like a welcome bonus for new ones, but that's not always the case.
In addition, at a DKP system, everyone can offer on everything. So if you have been waiting for a weapon as a warrior for months, but the hunter has more DKP, and she wants, or she wants to trow out, you are unlucky.
Which systems are used today? DKP are mainly emerging out of necessity, no better loot system available. Today, however, there are heaps of other methods that are often more user-friendly and easier:
PRIOR X: Before the Raid, each member of X Items contributes to descending priority he would like to have. The Loot is then distributed according to prioritize. At a tie, dice or similar decide. Suicide Kings: Players are entitled to a lot after a hierarchical list. If you get an item, you migrate to the end of the list. Plüdermeister / Loot Council: a single player or an advice from officers determines which member the prey receives. The end of the plunder master in Wow led to a big controversy. Random 100: It is rolled around the prey. The highest litter wins. Need for greed: Players who need an item urgently have priority. At a tie, dice decide.
Also, for the more modern methods, there are often add-ons or websites that manage the Loot system. By the way, if you ask you on which items the offer or dice is particularly worthwhile, just look at the color of the name:
Why is the Loot always white, green, blue, purple and gold?
